What is a HCG Blood Test Pregnancy?

Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of two α and β subunits naturally produced by the placenta. HCG determination is useful for confirming pregnancy and evaluating trophoblastic tumours. Its role is to maintain the corpus luteum during pregnancy. Its concentration increases exponentially, reaching the maximum value in weeks 8-11.

Why get tested?

  • To detect an ectopic pregnancy.
  • Screening for Down syndrome.
  • To detect and monitor HCG-secreting tumours.

What are the Instructions for use?

Please take your sample in the morning. Take it at least one hour before any medication.

1 Biomarker:

  • β-HCG: it is a hormone produced in your body during pregnancy.

How does it Work?

HCG Hormone Tests Pregnancy Blood ordering process Step 1

Order your kit online and once it arrive collect your sample at home.

Blood Test Pregnancy HCG Tests Step 2

Then, drop off the Kit in the morning to the Royal Mail Red Street Box. Use the Track24/48 Return Label to the Lab.

Blood test Pregnancy HCG Hormone Step 3

Lastly, once your results are ready, we will send you an email with your Result. Also you can view the report in your Dashboard.

How long do the results take?

The target turnaround time for the results is 1 working day of receiving in the laboratory. However, The turnaround time is a guide only and sometimes depends on assay run schedules.

Please take your sample from Monday to Thursday to avoid delivery delays at the lab.

Home Sample Management

Furthermore, some rules exist about making Private Blood Test Pregnancy at home. First, you need to take the sample close to the delivery time. Do not take the same and leave it around the home for 1-2 days. Please make sure that you get the sample to the drop box before the last pick-up for that box. But when you first take the sample, please rotate the tube six times to ensure it is mixed correctly with the non-clotting solution in the tube.

So, please ensure the sample leaves the drop box and travels overnight to our lab in the track24 return bag.

Also, you may obtain some help by visiting our clinic near me to get your results. Therefore, a prompt return is required to ensure samples are not rejected at the laboratory’s arrival point.

What are the Common Questions?

  • Q: How does it work?

    • A: They detect the presence of hCG (the hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin) in the blood. It is produced roughly six days after fertilisation. Always check the instructions, as requirements vary.
  • Q: When should I have one?

    • A: A test can detect hCG levels about 11 days after conception. These levels will generally double every 72 hours, reaching a peak in the first 8-11 weeks of pregnancy. After this point, they will level off for the rest of the pregnancy.
  • Q: Finally, what should I do after?

    • If your HCG Pregnancy Blood test result is positive and you want to continue it. You will need to continue monitoring it to ensure it increases properly.

What is the Scientific Data from Instrument and Reagent Supplier?

Technology Method:

Fluorescence quantitative immunoassay

Limit of Detection:

  • 5.0 mIU/mL

Precision:

The within-assay CV is less than or equal to 10%. The between-assay CV is less than or equal to 15%.

Measuring Range:

  • 5.0~10,000.0 ng/mL

Validation-Active Information:

  • EQA: Yes
  • Inter-laboratory validations
    • Periodic according to the validation schedule
    • Event-triggered- Qc/Calibration/New materials/Batch

Precision:

The precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient. The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same test was analysed again. The between assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample was reprocessed from the beginning again.

In range results:

Beta-HCG: <5.0 mIU/mL

Normal pregnancy:

  • 0.2 – 1 gestational weeks: 5-50 mIU/mL
  • 1-2 weeks: 50-500 mIU/mL
  • 2-3 weeks: 100-5000 mIU/mL
  • 3-4 weeks: 500-10,000 mIU/mL
  • 4-5 weeks: 1,000-50,000 mIU/mL
  • 5-6 weeks: 10,000-100,000 mIU/mL
  • 6-8 weeks: 15,000-200,000 mIU/mL

Out-of-range results:

Beta-HCG levels ≥ 25.0 mIU/mL are considered positive.

Pregnancy exam: how does it work, and after how long to do it?

The exam is the most important tool for knowing if you are pregnant. Sold in pairs, they are generally performed on urine, only in specific cases on blood. And they are highly reliable.

A fundamental moment in the life of a woman and a couple, it is the most effective tool for determining if you are pregnant: «Its reliability is around 95.99%, a percentage that is equally valid for tests bought in pharmacies much on those in the supermarket.

Which therefore makes them all very reliable,” explains Dr Elisabetta Colonese, a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics in Milan and consultant of the Mustela portal. But how does it work, and above all, how long do you have to wait before taking the exam?

When should you do for it to be effective?

«The basis of methods, both on urine and blood, is the detection of beta HCG, a hormone produced by the trophoblast, the very first cells of pregnancy. Generally, this hormone begins to be present around 7-10 days after conception,” explains the expert who makes a necessary clarification: “In this case “conception” means the union between the spermatozoon and the oocyte. Only then does the trophoblast begin to produce HCG.”

This is why it is done with urine: in fact, this is where the first signs of conception are found. Furthermore, given the timing, it is necessary to wait at least until the first day of delay of the canonical 28-day cycle to take the exam: «It is always a good idea to wait until there are at least one or better two days of delay to do a urine version. If you normally have a 28-day cycle, the sampling can be done from the 29th day, but if it is always 35-40 days, wait between the 36th and 41st day before taking it.”

What changes between urine and blood exams?

However, not all exams are the same. The one done on blood is faster, in this case it can be carried out between seven and ten days after conception. Thanks to this characteristic, these exams can be done with venous sampling and even with a finger prick, to be carried out easily at home.

The peculiarity of this exam is that, in addition to having a qualitative relevance, i.e. indicating whether beta HCG is present, it also gives the possibility of a quantitative value, making it a very reliable evaluation.

Depression: it could predict it and the signs are not to underestimate

But not all women have to do it: «In fact, those who have to take a sample are mostly patients who have had problems in the past such as spontaneous abortions, biochemical pregnancies, multiple miscarriages or extrauterine pregnancies including salpingectomy (a surgical operation which consists in the removal of the salpinx or the uterine tubes).

Another example is when it has been sought for a long time.

When the patient takes the urine exam, I also ask for the dosage to have a quantitative value and understand how the pregnancy is going. The value must have more than doubled after 48 hours.”

Instructions for use:

Generally, the kits are sold in pairs because once the first one is positive, another is immediately done, and also because «sometimes the first one can fail or can’t be performed very well. It may be the first time the patient has done it, the hand may tremble, the strip on which you have to urinate may not be centered. For this reason, I recommend using a sterile urine jar to insert the sample directly into the jar and be safe.”

Is there a more suitable time of day?

«Generally, you go crazy with the first urine sample because it is the most concentrated. But HCG pregnancy blood tests are now so reliable that they can be done at any time of the day.”

When can the results be unreliable? “It happens, for example, when the kits have expired or have been stored poorly, or if it is done poorly, perhaps due to emotion, or even too soon, thus creating a false positive.”
