It is a type of sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny parasite.
The parasite is usually spread by having sex without condom. It could be spread also by sharing sex toys, through vaginal-penile or vaginal-vaginal intercourse, anal sex, oral sex and genital touching (skin-to-skin contact without ejaculation).
Is very contagious. In addition to affecting the genitals, it can also infect the anus, mouth and hands.
It may never show symptoms and this is one of the reasons why it spreads so easily. However, if symptoms occur (tends to appear within 5 to 28 days after exposure), you may experience pain or discomfort during intercourse, vaginal discharge that has a bad odor, white discharge from penis, burning after ejaculation, burning or painful urination.
Without treatment, it can last for months or even years. It doesn’t go away on its own. The entire time you’re infected, you can give the STD to your sexual partners.
If you are pregnant and have this infection, it will increases the risk of premature labor, low birth weight.
It is linked to preterm birth and miscarriage. Also, it is possible that you may pass the infection to the baby during delivery.
Stopping treatment too soon or engaging in sexual contact before the infection is gone can lead to reinfection.
