Syphilis is a systematic infectious disease determined by T. pallidum.
How is it transmitted?
Anyone can get Syphilis if having unprotected sex with an infected person (it can be oral, vaginal or anal sex).
In pregnancy, it can be transmitted from the mother to her baby.
What are the symptoms?
Men and women have the same symptoms, but they vary depending on the infection stage. However, you can also have the infection without any symptoms.
Untreated, it can develop in stages:
Primary stage
Secondary stage
Latent stage
Tertiary stage
The primary stage shows a painless ulcer on the body part which has been in contact with the bacteria (especially the intime zones). This can show up after 2-3 weeks and can last up to 6 weeks. Depending on its location, it can disappear unobserved.
The secondary stage – the symptoms in this stage are skin rash (on hands and feet), genital inflammation, swollen glands, and white spots on the mouth. Even if no treatment is given, the symptoms usually disappear, but the infection will progress.
The latent stage – when the secondary stage of Syphilis disappears, the symptoms can not show up for a few years even if the infection is present.
The tertiary stage – after a couple of years from the infection, persons with untreated it will have serious neurologic, osteoarticular or heart diseases.
How is the Diagnosis done?
The diagnosis can be done by doing a Syphilis blood test.
The Preventiob:
You can only reduce the risk of getting infected by using a condom for protection. Also, if you are on treatment, it is recommended to have sexual contact only after you finish the treatment and the symptoms are not present anymore

What are the Common Questions?
Q: What is the most frequent way to be infected?
A: The most frequent way to get this disease is by unprotected sexual contact.
Q: What is the link with HIV?
A: If you have Syphilis, you have a higher risk of contracting HIV.
Q: Can you have it without any symptoms?
A: Yes, it is possible. This is called the Syphilis latent stage.
Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: It depends on what stage the disease is.
Q: Can you have it more than once?
A: Yes, you can get infected more than once. It doesn’t offer immunity against the disease even if you were treated before.
Q: How can I know if my partner has this disease?
A: Infected persons usually do not show symptoms in the early stage or can have symptoms similar to other diseases. This makes it harder to detect Syphilis in the early stages.
Q: What do I do if my partner has it?
A: You should stay calm, get checked as soon as possible, and protect yourself. It is usually recommended that both partners be treated simultaneously, even if there are symptoms of not.
Q: Can I get infected if I use a public toilet?
A: It is extremely improbable to get infected by using a public toilet.
Q: Can the disease be treated with natural remedies?
A: Because it is an infectious disease, it needs adequate treatment. There is no proof that natural remedies can treat the infection.
Q: Can the infection be transmitted by kissing?
A: It cannot be transmitted by kissing unless there are lesions or wounds on/in the mouth.
Q: Can the disease be prevented by using a condom?
A: Using a condom can only reduce the risk of infection, but it cannot prevent it completely.
Scientific Data from Instrument and Reagent Supplier
Technology Method:
Fluorescence quantitative immunoassay
Limit of Detection:
≤ 1.00 S/CO.
Precision:
The within-assay CV is ≤ 10%. The between-assay CV is ≤ 15%.
The precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient. The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same Syphilis sample is analysed again. The between-assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample is reprocessed from the beginning again.
Positive results:
Samples with concentrations greater than or equal to 1.00 S/CO are considered positive.
Negative results:
Samples with concentrations that are less than 1.00 S/CO are considered negative.
