What is the HE4 Sensitivity Exam?

The HE4 protein is in the epithelial cells of the human distal epididymis. It is specific to it and is a signal of fertility. It was later found that this protein is expressed in reduced amounts in the normal epithelium of certain tissues: the reproductive tract (including the ovary). This protein is detected in large amounts in the serum of patients with ovarian cancer. It remains a major health concern for women, with high morbidity and mortality rates. This check-up it is an excellent tool for assessing your sensitivity level to tumours.

Why get a one?

A high level of a specific tumour marker can indicate a particular condition. It helps the oncologist decide on the most effective treatment or combination and evaluate how well it worked. Sometimes, tumour markers are used for screening to detect cancer in high-risk individuals before any signs or symptoms appear, assisting your GP in determining a course of treatment.

Instructions for use

Please take your sample in the morning. Take it at least one hour before any medication.

When you collect your sample, try the following tips:

Drink plenty of water. Being well-hydrated will make it easier to collect your sample.
Shower before you make your sample or run your hands under warm water for a few minutes, as heat improves blood flow.
Do light exercise (move around, walk, etc.) to get the blood flowing.
Ensure your arm is below your heart level – let gravity do some of the work.
Nails that are too long can make it difficult to collect a sample.
Do not shake the sample vigorously but invert the tube gently 10 times. (gently swirl the tube after each drop of blood).
Do not squeeze (milk) the finger.
Re-warm your hands during collection where needed.

Therefore, the target turnaround time for the results is 1-3 working days. Also, the turnaround time is a guide only and will sometimes depend upon assay run schedules.

Please take your sample from Monday to Thursday to avoid delivery delays at the lab.

Sample Management.

Finally, when you make your sample, please ensure that you do not leave it sitting around for 1-7 days. Send the sample to the laboratory the same day you take it or even within a few hours. Make your dropbox delivery before the final delivery time on that day. Make sure that the drop box pick up is after your place your sample in the drop box. The sample must not be sitting overnight uncollected.

- A: Renal failure was the most common cause of false positive readings. Patients with renal failure also had higher levels than patients with benign gynaecological conditions.

- A: It may be found in higher than normal amounts in patients with some types of cancer, including ovarian epithelial.

- A: It is used to aid in monitoring recurrence or progressive disease in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer.
Q: Do I need to fast?
- A: Fasting is not required.
Q: What happens if the levels are high?
- A: If you have a high level of tumour markers, it suggests a higher likelihood of having cancer, but a biopsy is typically required to confirm or rule out the condition.

Accuracy and Precision:

The accuracy is based on the relative deviation. The relative deviation is the average deviation from the actual result value.

The precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient. The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same sample was analysed again. The between assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample was reprocessed from the beginning again.

In range results:

The reference range for healthy females and males is less than 140 pmol/L.

Out-of-range results:

Any result greater than the reference range would be considered abnormal. Those with elevated levels of HE4 may be at risk for ovarian cancer or other types.
