What does it detect?
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of two α and β subunits naturally produced by the placenta.
HCG determination is useful for confirming pregnancy and evaluating trophoblastic tumours. Its role is to maintain the corpus luteum during pregnancy. Its concentration increases exponentially, reaching the maximum value in weeks 8-11.
