What is the LDL Cholesterol Blood Test?
LDL tests are a type of blood test used by doctors to determine how much LDL cholesterol is present in a person’s circulation. Testing can be part of a lipid panel test or can be used to assess LDL levels independently.
Cholesterol cannot be dissolved in the blood. It must be transported to and from cells through molecules called lipoproteins. On the one hand, low-density lipoprotein is also known as “bad” cholesterol. One molecule of bad cholesterol is a single molecule of apolipoprotein that helps circulate fatty acids. The only function of these less dense molecules is to transport cholesterol to tissues and arteries.
Why get a Blood LDL Cholesterol test?
In most cases, a person with high cholesterol levels will show no signs or symptoms. High amounts of LDL cholesterol, on the other hand, can cause plaque to build up in a person’s blood vessels.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and waste products from the body’s cells. This accumulation inside a person’s arteries will narrow or block them. Plaque accumulation can lead to:
- Coronary artery disease (CAD).
- Stroke and heart attack.
- Chronic kidney disease is a condition that affects the kidneys.
As a result, a person’s cholesterol levels must be monitored frequently. A person may need to fast for 9–12 hours before getting an LDL blood test.

- Kidney disease.
- Liver disease.
- Subactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
- Age.
- Sex.
