Description

What is an HPV test?

Human Papillomavirus or HPV is responsible for almost 100% of cervical cancer cases in women. The infection is symptomless, so it can only be diagnosed with an HPV test. It is estimated that 1 in 2 will contract the virus in their lifetime. There is no treatment for this disease spread by skin to skin contact. However, cancer preventative measures can be taken if an infection is caught early enough.

There is no treatment for the virus itself. However, there are treatments for the health problems that HPV can cause:

  1. Genital warts can go away with treatment from your healthcare provider or with prescription medicine. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, stay the same, or grow in size or number.
  2. Cervical precancer treatment is available. Women who get routine Pap tests and follow up as needed can find problems before cervical cancer develops. Prevention is always better than treatment. For more information visit cancer.orgexternal icon.
  3. Other HPV-related cancers are also more treatable when found and treated early. For more information visit cancer.orgexternal icon.

Q: How HPV spreads?

A: HPV infection is transmit by skin contact-with-skin, skin-with-mucosa or mucosa-with-mucosa. It can also be transmitted through direct contact with secretions/leaks of an infected person. That is why the most frequently way to transmit it is sexual (oral, anal sex, etc). Careful! Even with protected contact with condom, there is a risk of HPV infection.

Q: How many types of HPV are?

A: There are over 120 strains identified so far. These fall in two categories: low risk strains and high risk strains.

Q: Why are they called high risk strains?

A: The reference is for the development of genital cancer. Therefore, some strains are more dangerous.

High risk HPV includes types: 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59 and 68.

Q: Why are they called low risk strains?

A: Los risk strains are associated with the development of warts. For these warts, the recommended treatment is excision or local treatment for their “destruction”. Indication for treatment is determined by your health provider.

Q: Can HPV be treated?

A: There is no treatment for HPV. But there is the vaccine which can help prevent the infection.

Q: If my partner or I have HPV, will we keep passing it between each other?

A: Current evidence suggests that natural immunity to HPV, and going on to develop an immune response that would protect against reinfection, is poor, so there is a possibility that reinfection between couples could happen.

Q: If I only had sex with one person I will still get HPV?

A: Having HPV isn’t a sign that someone has slept with a lot of people or been unfaithful to a partner, because you can get it during your first sexual contact – whether that is penetrative sex, oral sex, touching or sharing sex toys.

Q: Do all HPV types cause cervical cancer?

A: No, most HPV types does not cause cancer. About 13 HPV types can cause cancer. Types 16 and 18 cause 7 in 10 cervical cancer.

Q: What are the symptoms of HPV?

A: In most people, HPV does not cause any symptoms and you won’t know that you have it.

Q: What are HPV genital warts?

A: Genital warts are growths or bumps on the skin around the genital area. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, stay the same, or increase in size or number.

Q: How can I avoid getting HPV or genital warts?

A: Preventive vaccination against HPV is available. HPV vaccines are highly effective at preventing almost all genital HPV infections, including genital warts, and preventing HPV-related cellular changes or cancer developing.

  1. Mia S.

Great service! Quick results and clear information. I’ll definitely use your services again.

  2. Mark

The kit received it’s very discreet indeed! I had a few questions, but Cidalia was very helpful! Thank you again! I would also recommend the more expensive version of this test as if you’re positive you will know what type of HPV you have, so it’s worth the price! Somewhere else, you pay more and they don’t tell you what kind of HPV you have!
