Description
What is Glucose blood test?
A common blood test, but a crucial part of any health screening, glucose levels are a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, a disease in which the body cannot utilize sugar properly.
High glucose levels are indicative of diabetes mellitus, in which the body is unable to absorb sugar from the bloodstream properly. Typically found in blood, glucose is transported around the body by the bloodstream to provide energy.
In a healthy individual, low glucose levels may occur on occasion, but if they persist, it may indicate underlying problems with how the body metabolizes sugar. As we recommend that you fast for your health screening, the results will be reported as FASTING blood glucose results.
Serum glucose levels may be abnormally high (hyperglycemia) or abnormally low (hypoglycemia). Glucose measurements are used to diagnose and treat carbohydrate metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus.
Why get a Blood Glucose test?
To determine if your blood glucose level is within normal ranges; to evaluate for, analyze, and screen diabetes, and to screen for the presence of hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) and hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose).
If you have indications proposing hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, or if you are pregnant. If you have diabetes, you might be needed to screen glucose levels a few times each day utilizing a self-checking device.
What does the test measure?
Normal
Glucose levels in a blood sample drawn from a vein (referred to as a blood plasma value) may differ from glucose levels measured using a finger stick.
Your doctor will also consider your age, health, and other considerations while evaluating your results. Even if a value is not in the usual range, it can be normal for you.
High Level
You may have diabetes.
High blood glucose levels can also be caused by the following conditions:
• Severe stress.
• Heart attack.
• Stroke.
• Cushing’s syndrome.
• Medicines such as corticosteroids.
• Excess production of growth hormone (acromegaly).
Low level
Low glucose levels also may be caused by:
• Addison’s disease.
• Decreased thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism).
• A tumor in the pituitary gland.
• Liver disease, such as cirrhosis.
• Kidney failure.
• Malnutrition or an eating disorder, such as anorexia.
• Medicines used to treat diabetes.
