What are the Common Questions?

1. What is it?

  • A Complete Blood Count test is a common exam that helps evaluate overall health and detect various disorders, including anaemia and infection.

2. Why is used?

  • The exam is performed to assess overall health, diagnose a medical condition, monitor a medical condition, or monitor medical treatments.

3. What does it measure?

  • A CBC Blood test measures several components, including red cells, white cells, haemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets.

4. How should I prepare for it?

  • No special preparation is usually necessary. However, some medications can affect your results, so inform your doctor about any drugs you are taking.

5. Is fasting required before?

  • Fasting is not typically required. Your doctor will inform you if any special preparation is needed.

6. How is it performed?

  • A small blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm using a needle. The procedure usually takes less than five minutes. A home full blood count is performed differently with a finger prick. For more information, check our instructions.

7. Are there any risks associated with it?

  • The exam is very safe. You might have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly.

8. How long does it take to get results?

  • Typically, results are available 1-3 days after we receive the sample.

9. What do the results mean?

  • The results can indicate a variety of conditions. For example, a low cell count could suggest anaemia, while a high white cell count might indicate an infection.

10. Can I take the sample at home?

  • Yes, at-home CBC testing kits are available above.

11. What should I do after receiving my results?

  • Discuss your results with your doctor. They can provide interpretation and advice on any necessary follow-up steps.

`Would you like to read a shared CBC Test Story?

“I need to do a complete blood count right away.” With these words, an inhabitant of Portmeirion, a town of just over 1,800 inhabitants in Penrhyndeudraeth, confidently turned to the pharmacist, whose intervention saved his life.

The story’s protagonist, which has a happy ending, is Olly Robinson, owner of the Roelonds Pharmacy, who tells us how the events unfolded on a quiet Thursday at the end of September.

  • Doctor Robon, let’s go in order: what happened on September 24th?

Here in the village, we all know each other a little. I received a phone call from a citizen whom a specialist had already treated for some liver problems: “My doctor told me to do a FBC Complete blood count urgently.” Without thinking twice, I opened the pharmacy (it was closing day) and immediately had the patient do the requested analysis; this is a test we normally provide as a service to our customers. The numbers returned by the test were very worrying: haemoglobin at 5, hematocrit at 15 (the normal value is close to 40). In practice, the blood mass available to the patient was almost zero.

  • What did you do then?

We called the specialist who was treating the patient. The situation was truly critical; there was a risk that the patient would not make it. He was very pale, totally powerless; he could barely walk and struggled to speak. His heart was beating, but very little blood was circulating, and oxygen was reaching the organs and tissues. The rescuers and the specialist opted for a trip to the emergency room of the Lansei hospital, about 40 minutes away. Along the way, the specialist called the patient every 15 minutes to update him on his condition. When he arrived at the hospital, seeing the full blood count report carried out at the pharmacy, the doctors admitted him urgently, and he immediately underwent a blood transfusion.

  • Did we find out what this lack of circulating blood was due to?

After stabilizing him, the hospital doctors carried out several CBC Blood tests and were able to ascertain the presence of ongoing gastrointestinal bleeding.

  • Do you have any news on how the patient is now?

I know he’s stabilized. However, he had to undergo several blood transfusions. From what I’m told, he received five bags.

In short, we can say that if it hadn’t been for you to open the pharmacy on the day off and, above all, be able to have the blood count done, the story would have had a different epilogue… Do you feel like a bit of a hero?

Let’s talk about rural pharmacies.

Like the one I work in, they are a real point of reference for the health of citizens far from large population centres where they can turn to other healthcare facilities. Furthermore, the timeliness and reliability of an important analysis (such as the Full Complete blood count) are an added value for the pharmacy. As for being a hero, there are other heroes. Certainly, social cohesion and civic solidarity – and the pharmacy represents a fundamental player – allow us to deal with small and large problems. After all, stories of health emergencies in remote places are not that rare.

  • Meaning what?

I remember, not long ago, a patient for whom I did an ECG (electrocardiogram), which showed a heart rate of 30 beats per minute. We managed to get her to the hospital quickly. She had a complete blood count and an atrioventricular block. She was implanted with a pacemaker to avoid cardiac arrest. I can also mention another case in which an ECG taken during the night revealed an ongoing heart attack in an elderly patient. Another provincial story with a happy ending.
