What is it?

Human Papillomavirus is responsible for almost 100% of cervical cancer cases in women. The infection is symptomless, so it can only be diagnosed with an HPV test. It is estimated that 1 in 2 will contract the virus in their lifetime. There is no treatment for this disease spread by skin-to-skin contact. However, if an infection is caught early enough, cancer-preventative measures can be taken.

There is no treatment for the virus itself. However, there are treatments for the symptoms that it can cause:

  1. Genital warts can go away with treatment from your healthcare provider or prescription medicine. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, stay the same, or grow in size or number.
  2. Cervical precancer treatment is available. Women who get routine Pap exams and follow up as needed can find problems before cervical cancer develops. Prevention is always better than treatment. For more information, visit Cancer. Org. External icon.
  3. Other related cancers are also more treatable when found and treated early. For more information, visit Cancer. or external icon.

Human Papillomavirus, is a family of over 100 viruses that affect the skin and most parts of the human body. The majority of its viruses are spread through sexual contact, and therefore it is classified as a form of STI.

There aren’t always clear indications of HPV, so many people do not be aware of the virus.

Although infection doesn’t cause symptoms, the various types of the virus can trigger the development of genital warts or abnormal cells in the cervix, which can occasionally result in cervical cancer.

Within the UK, it is part of the cervical screening offered by the NHS. Women who are 25-49 are screened every three years. Women between 50 and 64 are invited every five years.

If you’ve been diagnosed with the virus, it could take weeks or even months until it is discovered.

Certain organizations recommend that young women undergo exams often because of the chance of developing cervical cancer if they are carriers of the risky types of the virus.

If you’ve had intimate encounters that were potentially exposed to the virus, it is recommended to be checked. It is recommended to wait sometime after exposure before having an exam so that the amount of viral infection (amount of virus present in your body) is high enough to be detected.

Cervical cancer screening is known to reduce the cervical cancer rate among women. Cervical cancer cases have been declining since 1975 due to the Pap smear. Screening with high-risk variant (like the DNA or mRNA) further supported this downward trend when it became a recommended screening option by public health organizations in 2003.

The Pap smear and screening for high-risk strains offer a chance to catch cervical cancer early and seek treatment.
