PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. Contrary to popular belief, doctors and health care providers are not the only ones who wear protective clothing. This can be classified into the following categories:

N-95 Respirators

Workers wear this to protect themselves from illnesses and because they are more effective than surgical at 95%. However, due to a global shortage of these covers, citizens are advised only to wear surgical as these are readily available. These covers protect the wearer from small air particles, mists, fumes, and microorganisms. Unlike surgical, these will require a fit-test before you buy. Doctors and health care providers should wear N-95 respirators. This is especially for those working in a lab or who are at risk of contracting airborne diseases.

Half Mask

This is to protect you from harmful fumes, gas vapor, and airborne microorganisms. The respirator comes in handy if you are in an environment that does not require you to protect your eyes from hazardous substances.  It also requires a fit test before buying it.

Full Cover

These are face masks that offer protection from airborne microorganisms, dust, and gases. This also protects the eyes of the wearer as well as his/her face.

Body Protection PPE

Firstly, an individual working in a hazardous environment is required to have protective clothing.

Cotton and Polyester Blend

TTR Workers who wear clothes made from polyester are protected from dirt, chemical hazards, radiation, and biological hazards.

Nomex or Flame Resistant Cotton

Those who deal with air reactive chemicals, explosives, and organic solvents wear Nomex made clothes.


Doctors wear cloths made from Polyester to protect themselves from infectious diseases. Keep in mind that polyester is not fire-resistant. As we get more accustomed to using PPE’s, it is also our responsibility to ensure we adhere to social distancing requirements to flatten the curve further.
